MIDI SONGS

I’ve decided to compile the pieces created with the help of SE that are more interesting, to my mind. Some of them are my compositions, some belong to other authors who use Style Enhancer (SE). The main reason for selection was full processing of all tracks by SE, no hand editing of Pitch, Expression, Modulation and other curves, that means all performance nuances have been entered by the software.

Notes
If you don’t have a wavetable sound card or a good synthesizer keyboard with GM mode, you perhaps would not hear all performance nuances. If you use an expensive sound module (Ensoniq, EMU, etc.) you will hear more details than I did while tuning these songs for Yamaha DB50XG and MU100R. Expensive and cheap synthesizers are like good and poor musicians. The former ones understand maestro with half a word but the latter don’t follow the baton (controllers) at all.
All compositions found on this site have been released for public, royalty free, use with the request that they remain unedited and maintain the original copyright information included in the midi files.
All of these files are for GM/GS soundcards or modules.  If you would like to have them in Yamaha XG or MU100R format, they are available from my home site

Oriental Bazaar I wanted to try various styles and sometimes untraditional intoning, therefore I entered many instruments, which one after another carry the melody. It is very interesting, that in the second part what occurred was the interpretation of the same melody in acoustic guitar, flute and human voice; just as though the performers really had full freedom right down to changing  the notes. In percussion part oneI used a special Style in which high-hat, bass drum and snare displacement on start time was forbidden, but a very large displacement was entered into the Tom and Bongo group. "More different SE Styles are more intonations!" Transformed parts: Fretless Bass, Electric Guitar (jazz), Overdriven Guitar, Distortion Guitar, Violin, Alto Sax, Viola, Piccolo, Acoustic Guitar (n), Drums, Flute, Voice Oohs, Choir Aahs.

Simple Bossa Nova This piece was written by V.Shilov and Bulgarian guitarist Mitko Tonchev in 1995. I  made some arrangements and  processed it in SE. Acoustic Bass, Pan Flute, Acoustic Guitar (n), Electric Guitar (j), Tenor Sax, String Ensemble 2, Drums. Guitar accompaniment was generated by SE.

To Helen About Helen This was made as an instrumental version of the song "To Helen About Helen" written for the birthday of talented pianist Elena Avdeenko in March 1996. The song is a little confused like the character of this sweet girl. All tracks of the piece were transformed by SE and Acoustic Guitar accompaniment part was generated on the basis of chord sequence and then transformed too. Transformed part: Fretless Bass 2, Electric Guitar (jazz), Acoustic Guitar (n), Pan Flute, Choir Aahs, Alto Sax, Pad 2 (warm), Drums.

Song for Rita Rebany Birthday This is a short, but  very soft and lyrical piece written by one of the SE users, Leonid Rih.

Siberian Dreams about Spain This composition was the result of an  improvisation by my friend, arranger and composer V.Shilov. Together we stayed very late at work - he in his studio, and I in my office. At four o'clock in the morning he played me some tracks he had created  in fifteen minutes. After that I spent two hours to pack material, quantize duration's and level velocities. Then I spent  10-15 minutes in SE. Next  day we listened to the  file on Yamaha SY99 and Ensoniq TS10 and decided on the name. Acoustic Guitar (n), Electric Guitar (jazz), Acoustic Guitar (steel).

She Could Change Nothing This lyrical piece is very dear to me. It is about love and the person who can not always change his fate. I have infringed the rules a bit and  applied style with Pitch Wheel to the  Acoustic Piano, but it seems to me this piece is correct. My friends like the solo bass very much. I used 5 SE Styles and Trumpet Solo. Electric Bass (finger), Pan Flute, Trumpet, Choir Aahs, Grand Piano, Koto, Synth Voice, Drums, Synth Strings.

Why is Life This Way This is the first time I tried to make a fast piece. I had a good lyrical melody in French style, which I was going to make in slow tempo in 12/8 early, but it ended up as a fast vigorous version. In some places the saturated parts of percussion's are generated in SE with the help of a special Style. The name for the song in English was thought out by  our American friend from Salt Lake City, R.Nickol. Electric Bass (pick), Synth Voice, Trumpet, Overdriven Guitar, Viola, Rock Organ, Drums. Fragments of Drums was generated by SE.

Dreams About Bekma River This short sequence of a very popular Korean songs, written by Im Gin Sik, was made before my trip to the International Science and Technology Symposium KORUS-97, Korea.  My
friend, Kyoo-Nyun Kim who is a   Professor at Ulsan University, Korea,  suggested I do this to demonstate the Performance Modeling technology. I combined simple chords and melody in one track and then transformed with the help of SE.  The resulting  accompanying guitars seemed very interesting.  When I then  added in a second part, a Baritone Sax solo, I  realized that the piece had acquired some kind of American character. The style  I used  in this  composition is now included in  Style Set 2 "Winter97".

Slavonic Soul Three or four year ago I wrote the melody and words of  a song "Line of Life". I  played it only for myself on guitar and piano. It seemed  to me to be too simple, even primitive, to make a composition of.  But, when Anya Gerasimova,  daughter of my colleague, translated the words  into  English, everything acquired a different hue.  In December 1997, before holidays, when everyone is usually thinking about eternal questions, I decided to try to make this song in Midi-variant.  The very approving reaction of my friends and colleagues - engineers and musicians was unexpected by me. Lead tone-engineer of Novosibirsk Conservatory Studio Andrey Yermolayev has said: "It is surprising, it is the first time I have  listened to a MIDI-file and not focused my  attention on technology - music has carried me away".

Jingle Bells It seems to me, that this variant of popular Christmas song Jingle Bells probably is the most original. I even named it Sweet New Year Musical Joke by Leonid Rih.

Don't Say Farewell to Beloved This composition was the  result of my first experience in Techno. I tested the new NTONYX program Pattern Variator, for fast creation of the basis's for compositions of Techno, Rave, NewAge. I wrote a  Pattern (4 bars) in Techno style  and  received the basis (32 bars). It was very pleasant, especially imitation of the analogue synthesizer on DB50 using Harmonic Content (71) and Brightness (74). I made the full piece out of this basis and could enter lyrical tunes (Ac.Guitar, Whistle), which was then  processed in SE.

The Phantom of the Opera This version of a popular theme by A.L.Webber is rather interesting. It seems to me that this  version, made by Leonid Rih, can  become quite a dancing hit.

XG Shamanism The song "XG Shamanism" written by Leonid Rih, was avowed in NTONYX competition as the best piece of 97created with the help of SE. This piece is a little strange, even a little terrible, but with much  emotion. The  "shaman" vocal part is difficult to access even in sample technology.  Listening to the piece gives unequal emotional responses, each see it in a different way, but hardly anyone can remain indifferent. In fact, the midi-compositions can be very alive, by  effective and correctly used controllers. The piece is adjusted for XG, and if you don't use XG module, you unfortunately will not hear many things.

Spring in Alaska I wrote this song on March 17/98 after watching a TV program about nature of Alaska and northern Canada. It is beautiful, great and inclement. Also it's like nature of the Russian North.

Through Previous Incarnations At the beginning of April 98 I received an invitation to enter my compositions in the PAE'98 competition (Austria). This piece is the result of  my work for three weeks.

It consists of three different manner parts. Tunes of Part 2 and 3 are the result of harmonic and rhythmic transformations of the Part 1 Tune (in Pattern Variator v1.0). Capabilities of SE are shown at the example of the traditional score. In some parts the performance manner has been let outside the usual limits in order to make the result brighter. All performance nuances were calculated by SE, the only things done by hand were Master Volume Balance, Tempo Changes between Parts, G.FretNoise and Tempo Changes of Part Three.

This is the first time I used Styles with Tempo calculation and attained such lyric, soft, wonderful and lively vocal part.

Another woman For a long time I wanted to make one of the songs I liked from my youth. Perhaps most dear from them - "Another woman" *).... At 15-17 years I, with my school friends played it on school evenings in a cafe. I smile, recollecting it, but then we wanted to act like  adults and sang the "adults" songs :-). It is a really good song, its verses are clear for everybody,  not only for Russians... I know it, as I sang it once in a restaurant in Italy and at a banquet in the Republic of Korea... I hope, that my translation is not so bad:

You - a casual meeting
You rushed, as a wind
I shall long remember
your shoulders and lips.
I don't know, what then happened.
I only joke, hiding a pain.
You - another, you - an another woman
And you will not be with me...

*) The author is unknown, so I think it is a modern urban folk Russian ballad
