Alex (Alexei)
Ustinov: Director of MIDI Technology
BIOGRAPHY
I was born in 1957 in a small
town not far from the beautiful and cool great Siberian lake Baykal. As
a schoolboy I went in for music, machinery and sports. Since I was 14 I
played the keyboard and guitar in amateur groups. Once I was turned out
of solfegio lesson for playing rock-n-roll on the piano, and for my work
in a restaurant (as a musician) I was nearly expelled from Komsomol (Union
of Young Communists). Sorry, but then one hardly was able to enter a high
school without being a member of this political organization. You could
better imagine this situation if you learn that back in 1970-s it was absolutely
forbidden to listen to music like the Beatles or Rolling Stones at school
dancing parties.
In 1975 I entered the radio department
of Novosibirsk Technical State
University, I studied theoretical and practical subjects and went on
playing in amateur music groups. Since 1978 the kernel of NTONYX had started
to build up. We developed and produced amplifiers for guitars, bass, vocal,
the things as Distortion, Flanger, Wah-wah, etc.
In 1978 I made my first synthesizer.
I think, it was the first soviet synthesizer over the Urals. The main principle
of our team has always been not to ever copy anything but to look for our
own solution. One of my teachers, Professor V. Kagan used to say, “Never
hurry to look at the answers of others - if you find the answer yourself
you will always leave something special.” After graduation the University
I worked at some industrial enterprises and research institutions but when
I and my colleagues tried to develop our topic we were always considered
to be rara avis.
Since 1983 I’ve worked in Novosibirsk
State Conservatory in various positions from recording studio Manager
to Assistant professor at Computer Department. The forward looking Rector
of the Conservatory E.Gurenko, who devoted his research to performance
interpretation problem, has created necessary conditions for our work,
even despite the negative (at first) reaction of academic musicians. Without
this I don’t think all my efforts would have been enough to set up NTONYX
group as it is now a unique, wonderfully united team.... In 1982 I got
married thus giving up my job as a musician in a restaurant and dance hall.
Now I’ve got three sons - Alexander, Valentine and Pavel. I have always
dreamt about a daughter but it seems I am not fated to.
