MIDI FILE PROBLEMS

NONE of the files I uploaded to my site will play
when I click on them from my Home Page.

You completed you home pages and all of the MIDI files played with the Crescendo Midi Plugin when you tested them from the Hard Drive. After uploading the pages and files, they would no longer play when you browsed your site. Instead, you received a message that you were starting to download a file of the type "Octet Stream".

This, and in some cases if the Windows Media Player attempts to load, is a clear indication that the wrong "MIME" type is being sent by your Server. You can confirm exactly which MIME type is being used. Browse you page on-line, and then from the Menu on your browser, select "View" | Document Info. Find the midi file name and the MIME type attached to it will be shown. Usually when it does not play, as above, you will see "Text/Plain", which is the default for files of unknown type or a type that is not configured on the Server. Once you have confirmed the type, then contact your ISP's System Administrator and advise that you have midi files on the Server and that the MIME type associated to files with the ".mid" extension should be of the "Audio/Midi" MIME type.
